One Hundred and Four Horses

One Hundred and Four Horses

One Hundred and Four Horses is Mandy Retzlaff’s personal story of working to save her family and the animals in their care from Mugabe’s guerrilla war in 1970’s Zimbabwe. As fellow farmers are killed or flee Zimbabwe, Retzlaff takes in the horses they leave behind and builds a strong relationship with each animal. This book is full of intense issues and at times can be hard to read. Mandy’s children are roughly my age and it was eye opening to see what people of my generation were going through simply by living in another country than the safe one I grew up in. This book was great at removing my blinders and teaching more about the lives of those in Zimbabwe. (Mugabe only recently resigned during the course of impeachment hearings against him – so now I need to read up on my current Zimbabwean events.)
